The Ultimate Guide to Self-Building and Home Building with Natural York Stone

Natural stone has been used in construction for thousands of years and continues be a popular choice today. Some of the UK’s most well-known landmarks are built using natural British stone. York stone, or Yorkshire Stone, is a variety of sandstone quarried in Yorkshire. York stone is a tight grained, Carboniferous sedimentary rock consisting of quartz, chlorite, mica, feldspar and iron oxides.

Yorkshire stone is known for its quality, strength, hard wearing characteristics and of course it’s beauty – The perfect choice for home building! At Ashlar Stone Products we supply natural stone walling, heads, cills, coping, paving, stringcourse, sawn Ashlar walling and more all quarried at our site near Keighley, West Yorkshire.

Design

It’s never too early to get in touch to discuss your potential stone requirements! If you will require large quantities of stone, it’s always good to give us a head start in production, so materials are ready to be shipped as soon as you need them on site. We don’t always hold stock of our walling products and we make all dimensional stone to order so it’s worth keeping in mind that lead times could be 12 weeks in busy periods, and more for large quantities. We often supply walling stone in stages, due to the time it takes to produce and also to help save space on your site.

Another benefit of getting us involved early in the process is that we can check your stone requirements are practical and cost effective from a production point of view. As stone is a natural product, there are limits to how large some pieces can be. For example, window heads and cills and steps over 2.5 meters long are usually not possible, due to the length of the blocks coming out of the quarry. We can work with our customers and their architect to find the best solution based on the overall design you are working towards.

Quote based on Cutting List

Once your design if finalised we can prepare a personalised quote based on your exact requirements. Due to the nature of many bespoke builds, we are usually not able to provide a quote until we know the exact dimensions and finishes. Prices can vary greatly depending on the finishes you choose.

Your cutting list (or Bill of Quantities) will usually be prepared by your quantity surveyor or architect – If you don’t have a quantity surveyor it might be useful to let your architect or building contractor know they will need to produce this. It will contain the exact quantities and dimensions (length, height and width) of all stone products on the build, as well as any masonry work needed.

Window heads and cills are often overlooked – so don’t forget to order these early as they are made to order!

Payment Process

When placing an order for a project, big or small, we will request a deposit before we can start production. For dimensional stone which is being cut to order this is usually 50% of the order total, but is assessed on a case by case basis. Payment of the remaining balance will be due prior to each delivery.
